The best way to lubricate any lock is to disassemble it and use an aerosol lubricant to flush away grime and coat the moving parts of the lock.

It did not latch shut. The thicker the cardboard the harder it may be to cut but it could save you from having to use several pieces while packing it out. This gunk and grime can impede the movement of springs as well. In addition to cleaning and lubricating sliding door tracks you want to lubricate the door lock.
